Early Life

Hakeem Seriki, better known by his stage moniker Chamillionaire, was born on November 28, 1979, in Washington, DC. He attended Jersey Village High School and developed an interest in rap music while there. Rasaq Seriki, his younger brother, is also a rapper.

Chamillionaire’s stage name is a combination of the terms “chameleon” and “millionaire.” Seriki and fellow rapper and buddy Paul Wall were advertising at an event when they encountered Michael “5000” Watts, a Houston-based mixtape DJ. They suggested assisting Watt in promoting his business Swishahouse and persuaded him to let them freestyle during the beginning of his radio program on Houston hip-hop station KBXX-FM. Watt included their freestyle on one of his mixtapes, and they quickly established themselves as a fixture in Houston’s rap culture and mixtape circuit.

Career

He established Chamillitary Entertainment, his own musical company, in 2004. He, along with Lil Ken and Troy Henry, is signed as an artist. Yung Ro, 50/50 Twin, and Seriki’s younger brother Rasaq are also former musicians. The label has over 20 releases, including mixtapes and full-length albums. Previously handled by Universal Records, Chamillitary Entertainment has operated independently since Seriki severed ties with the prominent label in January 2011.

Achievements

Seriki invested in Fly Rydes, a Houston-based car dealer, in 2003. The business focuses on vehicle customization, which he said is very popular in Texas. Seriki is also the founder of Masterpiece Mind Frame, a modeling agency. Seriki co-founded the Global Innovation Tournament with Quincy Jones III in 2009 as part of the Stanford Entrepreneurial Thought Leaders Seminar Series. Additionally, he invested in Maker Studios in 2009, an online video talent network purchased by Disney for $500 million.

Seriki invested $1.5 million in Maker Studios and received a rumored payment of more than $20 million from the transaction. He also formed a relationship with Mark Suster, the creator of Maker Studios and a managing partner at venture capital company Upfront Ventures, which aided in his appointment as the business’s entrepreneur in residence in 2015. He has subsequently taken a step back from music, concentrating his efforts on his business career.
