John DeLorean was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1925, the eldest son of four. Zachary, his father, was a Romanian immigrant who worked in a mill factory, and Kathryn, his mother, was a Hungarian immigrant who worked for General Electric. Due to Zachary’s frequent violent outbursts, Kathryn relocated the children to Los Angeles, where they stayed intermittently for years. DeLorean’s parents divorced in 1942.
DeLorean was married four times in total. The first marriage, which lasted from 1954 to 1969, was to Elizabeth Higgins. The following year, he married actress and model Kelly Harmon, whom he divorced in 1972. DeLorean married Cristina Ferrare the following year; they adopted Zachary’s son and had a daughter, Kathryn Ann. In 1985, the couple divorced. Finally, in 2002, DeLorean married Sally Baldwin. They had a daughter, Sheila, together and resided in Morristown, New Jersey.
DeLorean began his career in 1956 as an assistant to General Motors’ Pontiac division’s general manager Semon Knudsen and chief engineer Pete Estes. DeLorean was enormously successful in his engineering career at GM, producing a slew of patented innovations during his years there; he was promoted to division chief engineer in 1961 as a result.
Among DeLorean’s most illustrious accomplishments at GM was the Pontiac GTO, in which he assisted in conceptualizing, engineering, and marketing. Seen as Pontiac’s golden child, he was promoted to president of the entire Pontiac division in 1965. DeLorean became General Motors’ youngest division head at the age of 40. He later developed additional future classic vehicles, including the Firebird and the Grand Prix luxury car.
DeLorean was promoted once more in 1969, this time to head the prestigious Chevrolet division. Despite Chevrolet’s organizational and financial difficulties at the time of his appointment, DeLorean helped the brand achieve record sales by 1971. The following year, General Motors Assembly Division assumed control of the Chevrolet assembly plant in Lordstown with the goal of reducing costs and hiring. As a result, workers began deliberately slowing the line and omitting parts, precipitating a one-month strike.
DeLorean reorganized in 1973, with the flagship Vega model performing well. Despite his new position as vice president of car and truck production for the entire General Motors line, DeLorean announced his resignation in April 1973, citing disagreement with the company’s direction.
Without a doubt, John Zachary DeLorean was a brilliant engineer. A flamboyant, aggressive businessman who broke free from the 1950s’ staid, yes-men culture, he would prove to be an early model of the modern American visionary think Jobs, Bezos, Zuckerberg who defied convention in pursuit of a singular vision. That meant, in his case, attempting to build the greatest sports car the world had ever seen.
He was also accused of being a thief, a fraud, an embezzler, and a fearless con man who conned everyone he ever dealt with, from celebrities to superpowers, defrauding them of millions of dollars. After DeLorean’s 2005 death, Howard Weitzman, the carmaker’s longtime attorney, and staunch personal advocate told the Los Angeles Times that “John DeLorean had one of the most warped views of right and wrong” he had ever encountered.
